RFK: 'What we need in the United States'

It was upon the death of Dr. Martin Luther King that Robert Kennedy, JFKs younger brother, addressed the issue of what we need in the United States. One can be sure that upon that tragic occasion, Kennedy did not intend to lecture or proselytize. He was not on the stump. On that night, he wasn't trying to get any one elected. His intention was one of consolation in the face of tragic loss. In it is found our nation's only hope.

Given the path our nation has taken over the last eight years, we must now reassess where we have been and whether we wish to remain there. The divisions are not merely 'racial' now. One American is pitted against another based upon privilege and power. It is time again to consider 'what we need in the United States'.

Now, as then, we want justice for all human beings that 'reside in our land'. Given the last eight years, in which we have waged aggressive war and mass murder upon populations having nothing whatsoever to do with 911, we must restore the principles of 'justice' of which RFK spoke so profoundly, simply, from the heart and without notes, speech writers, press agents or spin doctors.

Over the last eight years, justice had been subverted from within and from the top --not from without. 'Leaders' --elected and otherwise --have accomplished what no terrorists have either accomplished or attempted. The 'enemies' are of our own invention, created that we might be subdued from within.

We simply may not presume to impose by force a fiat that is without basis in law, justice, or compassion. Have we learned nothing from the violent decade of the sixties when, in fact, we waged war upon ourselves as an unfeeling government waged war upon us as well as against the people of Viet Nam? Did we learn nothing from the civil rights movement? Did we learn nothing from the deaths of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy and many others too numerous to name?
Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States and he is frequently referenced as a human rights icon today.

A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955–6) and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (1957), serving as its first president. His efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history.

Robert Francis "Bobby" Kennedy (November 20, 1925 – June 6, 1968), also called RFK, was the United States Attorney General from 1961 to 1964 and a US Senator from New York from 1965 until his assassination in 1968. He was one of U.S. President John F. Kennedy's younger brothers, and also one of his most trusted advisers and worked closely with the president during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also made a significant contribution to the African-American Civil Rights Movement.

After the John F. Kennedy assassination in late 1963, Kennedy continued as Attorney General under President Johnson for nine months. He resigned in September 1964 and was elected to the United States Senate from New York that November. He broke with Johnson over the Vietnam War, among other issues.

After Eugene McCarthy nearly defeated Johnson in the New Hampshire Primary in early 1968, Kennedy announced his own campaign for president, seeking the nomination of the Democratic Party. Kennedy defeated McCarthy in the critical California primary but was shot shortly after midnight of June 5, 1968, dying on June 6. On June 9, President Johnson assigned security staff to all Presidental candidates and declared an official day of national mourning in response to the public grief following Kennedy's death.

The Real Reason Fox is Upset with Hillary

Watching FOX hyperventilate about Hilary Clinton is like watching crocodiles weep. Fox is not truly outraged by Hilary's ill-phrased comments and, in fact, misses the point and lies about it! Fox claims that Hilary crossed the line by implying that Obama was in danger. In fact, Obama is in danger; Fox is in denial. Everyone knows that Obama is in danger and so, too, every decent politician in America. How many Republicans got Anthrax letters?
Fox itself is among the lying media monopolists and establishment imperialists who have combined to justify our suspicions.

When a definitive history is written, FOX will have been shown to have played a key role in the dissolution of American culture, a culture in which only the paid liars of Fox, right wing extremists, or MIC kiss ups are safe from assassination. What FOX won't report is the real reason 'right wing' media are upset. An ugly truth about America is exposed by Hilary's ill-considered comments and by the failure of the media to confront the facts about the American right wing.

The right wing might have reason to be upset if Hilary, herself, posed a threat to the imperialist establishment. But she doesn't. If she had been, the source of their chagrin could have been summed up: as long as Hilary stays in the race, 'they' won't know who to shoot! But you will never hear that stated on Fox, just as in Texas you will never hear: "the tires on that truck are too big!"

Hilary's comments are both self-denigrating and arrogant but Fox is the official voice of right wing 'denial'. In one sense, Hilary implies that if Obama is murdered by the right wing, the Democrats will still have her --as a last resort! The party will not be left without a candidate. I feel so much better. In another sense, she arrogantly implies that she is the hope of both the party and America. Sad to say: Obama is, right now, our last hope. I am admittedly surprised that Fox would attack her. She hedges their bets.

If it is not true that only liberals and minorities are assassinated in America, it is certainly true and provable that the death rate by political assassination in those groups is much, much higher than among the robber barons of big oil, banking or the Military/Industrial complex.

Dare to champion the cause of democracy, equality, or opportunity and you've made yourself a target. Stats don't lie! Can anyone really believe that a candidate risks his/her life who runs on a platform of more welfare for the rich, more fat contracts for the MIC, more pork for GOP robber baron bankers? It is the people who challenge the imperial establishment who get murdered. So --who do you think is murdering them?

I don't expect Fox to 'get real'. They prefer to 'get rich' by spreading the lies that only some one percent of the population wants you to believe. They don't believe it themselves. It was Bertolt Brecht who said: "a man who does not know the truth is just an idiot but a man who knows the truth and calls it a lie is a crook!" Well --the US imperialist establishment is 'a crook'! I don't expect Fox will ever face that fact.

The 'dark souls' live in the White House and occupy the offices of Fox network. No one is more outraged than me for Hilary's comments. Indeed, she is tone deaf. But Fox is disingenuous and tone deaf. Conservative kiss ups are not truly outraged that anyone would suggest that Obama might be assassinated. Certainly --the Bush minions that comprise the very worst imitation of journalism since William Randolph Hearst are probably most outraged because Hilary let the cat out of the bag. That is, the United States is a nation that has systematically assassinated black, liberal or progressive opposition to the imperial establishment, and under Bush, a tyrannical rule by fascist robber barons and special interests

America's number one export is war. The 'real' economy has already collapsed. Will Fox tell you that? The business of America used to be 'business'. Now it is the killing of civilians in nations that dare oppose the US imperial establishment. I can say that and get away with it because I am no no threat. But JFK, RFK, and Martin Luther King Jr were threats to the imperialist establishment. So too were Paul Wellstone, JFK Jr, Mickey LeLand and others 'victimized' by 'suspicious circumstances'. That's what Hilary --herself NO threat to the MIC --should have been saying. That's the truth that Fox won't 'get' and won't tell. So --once again the nation endures a public hand wringing though nothing has been learned, no point has been made, no truth has emerged.

Yep! Fox is outraged alright! Hilary blew their cover! I look forward to the day when both Fox and Hilary are frog marched into political oblivion. I look forward to shouting from the rootops: don't let the door hit you in your sorry asses on your way out. I look forward to the day when Generals and lobbyists are out of a job while good hard working folk of any race have productive and meaningful jobs and enough income to feed their families and plan their educations and retirements. Alas --as long as ilk like Bush, McCain, Fox and Hilary are calling the shots, the folk I'm talking about are 'shit outta luck'.

A Dream of Freedom

George W. Bush enjoys the support of only one American in four, the lowest presidential approval rating in a generation. It is no coincidence that leading Dems beat every major ’08 Republican.

What is not clear from the polls is whether or not Americans really get it! Simplistic polls cannot measure the degree to which this "President" wages war on the US Constitution and every principle that impelled the separation from England. Have Americans, at last, grasped the subversive nature of this radical, reactionary, rogue administration? If not, Gore Vidal has a reminder.
This is an unpatriotic government. This is a government that deals openly in illegalities, whether it is attacking a country which has done us no harm, two countries—Iraq and Afghanistan—because we now believe, not in declaring war through Congress as the Constitution requires, but through the President. ‘Well, I think there are some terrorists over there, and I think we got to bomb them, huh? We’ll bomb them.’ Now, we’ve had idiots as presidents before. He’s not unique. But he’s certainly the most active idiot that we have ever had.

I am not inclined to quibble with Vidal. However, Bush's is not merely an "un-patriotic" regime, it is a treasonous one. Bush, after all, perpetrated a well-orchestrated fraud upon the sovereign so that he might wage a war of naked aggression and thus seize the oil fields of Iraq.

Vidal recently contrasted Bush with the Roman Emperor Tiberius whose reputation Vidal thinks suffers because his history was written by his enemies, most notably Tacitus.
The Senate of Rome sent him congratulations with the comment, “Any law that you want us to pass, we shall do so automatically.” And he sent a message back. He said, “This is outrageous! Suppose I go mad. Suppose I don’t know what I’m doing. Suppose I’m dead and somebody is pretending to be me. Never do that! Never accept something like preemptive war,” which luckily the Senate did not propose preemptive wars against places they didn’t like. But Mr. Bush has done that.

Scholars assure us that when Jesus Christ said "Render unto Caesar", the Caesar he referred to was Tiberius. Americans will remember Tiberius as portrayed by George Baker in the BBC series of I, Claudius of 1976 (Britain) and 1977 (US). The series was based upon Robert Graves' "I, Claudius" and relied heavily on Tacitus. It reinforced the image of Tiberius as a rake, retiring to Capri where he buggered anything that moved that also had an orifice. Tacitus himself says this of his own objectivity.
But the successes and reverses of the old Roman people have been recorded by famous historians; and fine intellects were not wanting to describe the times of Augustus, till growing sycophancy scared them away. The histories of Tiberius, Caius, Claudius, and Nero, while they were in power, were falsified through terror, and after their death were written under the irritation of a recent hatred.

In defense of Tiberius, Vidal reminds us that Tiberius was, at least, wiser than Bush who more nearly resembles Claudius, considered by his own family to have been an idiot, a stammerer, a failure, a "least consequential twig".
A member of a ruthless and murderous imperial family, he survives because he seems to all around him the least consequential twig of the family tree. But Claudius bears enduring witness to a moment when the virtues of the Roman republic, which has already been disposed of by the time he begins his tale, are being lost to the bloodlusts and hubris of the Roman empire.

 While scholars may quibble about the accuracy of Tacitus or that of Robert Graves, there is Gibbon who described, in a comprehensive nine volume history, the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire fell, he claimed, due to "a loss of civic virtue" in a lazy citizenry who just didn't get it.

Other reasons for the fall of Rome may be just as credible and equally modern sounding. Like the US under Bush, Rome lacked adequate budgetary controls, resources were wasted, defense was outsourced, not to Blackwater but to barbarians. As in the US, the Roman economy had become a Ponzi scheme premised upon conquest and plunder --perpetual war. Wealth trickled up, not down. A landed elite escaped taxation as they robbed poorer farmers of their lands. A "Roman dole" never paid its own way. Roman society was rotten, top heavy and broke. I can support my thesis that Rome's own currency had already collapsed by the time the Praetorian Guard auctioned off the empire to an aristocrat--Didius Julianus. Rome would have fallen if the barbarians had not gathered at the gate. [See: America's Indebted Prosperity]

Bush has assumed an imperial "Presidency", a dictatorship. He claims the power and authority to rewrite laws and interpret the Constitution. He has said that he will deprive Americans of every right affirmed in the Bill of Rights. Bush has said that he alone will define "terrorism" and to make the point, he flouts American treaty obligations. Unless Bush is checked or impeached, unless his corrupt administration is overthrown or otherwise brought down and utterly repudiated, his decrees will stand. Bush will have deprived every citizen of his/her rights. The people will have become subjects of a dictatorial regime which spies on them. Only a rogue state would find it necessary to rob its citizens of the rule of law and does so to maintain itself in power. Only a rogue regime finds it necessary to bully the rest of the world with nukes. Only a rogue regime will create enemies abroad in order to maintain its power base at home. This simply must not be tolerated. Any American regime effecting such an outcome is, by definition, illegitimate. The people are now and always sovereign.

I despair that my government has abandoned the democratic ideals of millions of Americans who must now bear the shame that Bush has brought upon them. Once a beacon of hope and freedom, the US now stands for atrocity and repression..

American "radicals" might never have posed a threat to an establishment that, at least, mouthed the ideals of our founding. Rather, radicals in America, settled into a role: that of a nagging conscience. Many "radicals" eased into the role of making uncomfortable a corrupt establishment --one that has begun the work of undoing Washington, Jefferson and Madison.

America was not always the reactionary right wing state that it is today. Throughout our history, American radicals, like latter day Calibans, lurked about the edges of our collective political consciousness. We often hear, like "a thousand twangling instruments", the dream that had been our founders' dream and, later, that of Martin Luther King.
In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

In waking from a "Caliban's" dream, we find ourselves ruled by the likes of Nixon, Reagan, Bush. When we should be roused to rebellion, we are, like Caliban, tempted merely to re-capture in sleep a sweet dream of freedom, equality and peace. But we must not doze. We must awaken and act!
