Dispatch from Grant Park: 'Change has come to America'

Grant Park was the site of 'Police Riots' back in 1968 --salvos that began a 'cultural war' not addressed but merely glossed over by Ronald Reagan's slick, smarmy appeals to bigoted-elitism on the one hand and US imperialism on the other. Barack Obama's acceptance speech is an invitation to begin the long process of healing.

'Grant Park' is a large public space between the Loop and lakeshore Drive. In 1979, it was the site of a papal visit and, in 1991, a Chicago Bulls NBA championship 'blow out'!

More famous than the open-air concerts and sporting events, however, is the symbolic role Grant Park played during the Democratic Convention of 1968! It has been written that the '...violence between police and anti-Vietnam war protesters ... gave the city a black-eye from which it has yet to completely recover.' Worse --Grant Park came to symbolize our lost hopes for peace in Viet Nam.

As his campaign progressed, Obama grew stronger from sources almost forgotten. America began to hope again. Grant Park may now be remembered for having played mid-wife to the re-birth of the American dreams of freedom, equality and peace.

Some people have expressed a desire to see David Iglesias become the next Attorney General, but I support Vincent Bugliosi.

Mind you we were all optimistic after the Democrats gained control of the House of Representatives that they would use their new power of subpoena judiciously. It never happened, and they didn't even pursue contempt charges against those who chose to ignore the few subpoenas they did draw up. I would hope that it's different now, but frankly I'm keeping my expectations low.

Of course, I have always been uphappy with the choices made at that time ---but kept my powder dry for concentrated fire upon Bush's most obvious and prosecutable crimes.

Even so, my personal email boxes contained some very kind comments this morning. You have to put it all in perspective. Realistically --it's really very, very hard to make a difference even if you happen to be the Washington Post. It's enough for me to think we've had a 'ripple effect' on the bigger debate.

Personally, I would have preferred Pelosi martial the resources at hand for a frontal charge. Admittedly, however, a feint is often more effective against a larger and better armed opponent. In those cases, it is better to harrass the enemy, tempt them to break ranks in hot pursuit, slice them apart piecemeal until your cart-wheeling flanking maneauver can strike the enemy hard and decisively in his sorry rear!

Alas --Pelosi may not have ever had that in mind. Or even grasped it.

Bugliosi is a good prosecutor but his murder case against Bush is a narrow one. I would hope we could find another Robert Jackson (Nuremberg) or RFK to head up the department. But --alas --I don't know where those kinds of folk are these days.

I would like to see Bugliosi prominently a part of a team of 'special prosecutors' appointed by the Attorney General (another RFK??) to investigate the Bush crime syndicate, draw up indictments, and present the findings to a federal grand jury.

An Obama Presidency;

"More Of The Same Only Worse",

(by Larry Pinkney, veteran Black Panther)

Like most, I hope that Barack Obama's presidency shall mean a turn for the better! But knowing that he went with, and voted in favor for, the last FISA Bill with retro-active immunity for crimes already committed, in favor of the increased military spending, in favor of the Wall-Street Bail-Out, makes me rather sceptic about the changes he realy stands for.

Time will tell, but if his presidential-agenda and his presidential actions go with the Corporate Flow, he could become the greatest deception in our lifetime!

Peace.
